Paper Backups in Humid Climates: A Jeonju Perspective

Why Paper Still Matters
Despite metal plates and encrypted digital backups, paper remains the most common recovery medium we encounter. It is inexpensive, easy to produce during initial wallet setup, and understandable to heirs. The weakness is environmental, not conceptual.
Storage Layers That Work
Effective paper backup storage uses three layers:
- Acid-free inner sleeve — Direct contact surface that does not off-gas chemicals onto the paper.
- Sealed moisture barrier — A vacuum bag or aluminised envelope with desiccant, replaced annually.
- Outer container — A fire-rated safe or deposit box, never a basement shelf in flood-prone areas.
We document all three layers in inventory sessions so heirs know which envelope to open and which desiccant pack to replace.
The Metal Plate Complement
Paper and metal serve different roles. Paper allows quick human-readable verification during annual reviews. Metal survives fire and flood that destroy paper. Conservative holders often maintain both, stored in separate locations — and our ledgers note the pairing explicitly so no heir assumes one backup replaces the other.

Schedule a backup envelope inspection every April, before monsoon season. Note the inspection date in your preservation ledger. Two minutes of checking desiccant colour prevents years of silent moisture damage.
